Memorial Day weekend, the outdoors is calling, and we are keeping it Memorial
This weekend is a gift and a responsibility.
Yes, it is the unofficial start of summer. Yes, the grill is probably already preheating in someone’s driveway. But before we sprint into sunshine and long weekends, we are going to do something simple on purpose.
We are going to remember why we are free to do any of this in the first place.
No sales. No hype. No noise.
Just gratitude, time outside, and a weekend that actually feels like it mattered.
What to bring so you enjoy it
Comfortable shoes. A light layer for night programs. Water and a snack. Bug spray because mosquitoes do not observe holidays. Binoculars if you have them
Friday, May 22
Sulphur Springs Creekwalk
3:30 PM to 5:00 PM Cleveland Metroparks. Best for: anyone who wants a real nature reset without driving far. Why go: creek walks feel like flipping a mental switch from work mode to weekend mode.
Friday Night Frogs
8:30 PM to 10:00 PM Summit Metro Parks. Best for: families, night hikers, people who want the full spring soundtrack. Why go: frogs at night are the closest thing Ohio has to a live concert where nobody charges for parking. Bring a headlamp or flashlight.

A quiet Memorial Day note
This weekend is fun, but it is also sacred.
Somewhere in the middle of the cookouts and the trail photos, take a moment. Read a name. Visit a memorial. Put your hand over your heart when you hear the anthem. Tell your kids why this weekend exists.
We are not turning Memorial Day into a marketing moment. We are keeping the memorial, memorial.
If you are looking for Monday options as part of the long weekend, Cleveland Metroparks lists Memorial Day programs including Memorial Day Nature Play and other drop by activities on Monday, May 25.
Quick picks so you do not overthink it
If you want one unforgettable night. Do Nassau Night Sky Viewing Saturday at Observatory Park.
If you have kids. Do the scavenger hunt drop by programs Sunday, then Meet the Creatures.
If you want something different. Blooms by Blacklight on Sunday night is a rare kind of fun.
If you want the “I actually did something” feeling. Extreme Hiking at Bedford Reservation Sunday morning.
