If you've lived in Ohio long enough, you know there are only so many perfect summer weekends.

This one has a pretty good shot.

The gardens are in full bloom. Corn is finally taller than most kids. Fireflies are still lighting up the evenings, and somewhere a neighborhood ice cream truck is creating lifelong memories one off-key song at a time.

The Fourth of July crowds have settled down, but summer is in full stride.

Whether you've got an afternoon, a full day, or just enough time to catch a sunset before Monday sneaks back in, here's what caught our attention this weekend.

Before You Go

Throw a bottle of water in the car.

Bring bug spray.

Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

That's about all you need.

Adventure doesn't usually require more planning than that.

Friday, July 17

Alive Festival Begins

Atwood Lake Park, Mineral City

One of Ohio's largest Christian music festivals kicks off this weekend at Atwood Lake. Three days of music, camping, speakers, family activities, and community make this much more than a concert.

Whether you stay for one evening or spend the weekend, it's one of those events that people tend to remember long after the stage comes down.

Evening at the Lake

Not every Friday needs an event.

Drive north.

Grab ice cream.

Watch the sun disappear over Lake Erie.

Mentor Headlands.

Fairport Harbor.

Edgewater.

Vermilion.

Lorain.

Ohio puts on a pretty impressive show every evening, and admission is still free.

Even if you don't buy anything, you'll leave inspired.

And probably wondering where people learn to make things that beautiful.

Downtown Cuyahoga Falls

If your family bonds over really good food, this belongs near the top of your list.

Authentic Italian food.

Live entertainment.

Classic cars.

Family activities.

Come hungry.

Leave happy.

Probably carrying leftovers.

Lakewood Summer Meltdown

Imagine an entire downtown turned into one giant block party.

Live music.

Food trucks.

Local businesses.

Cold drinks.

Thousands of people simply enjoying a July evening together.

That's Summer Meltdown.

Taste of Tremont

If you've never wandered through Tremont during Taste of Tremont, fix that.

Some of Cleveland's best restaurants spill into the streets.

Live music fills the neighborhood.

Artists line the sidewalks.

You can spend an afternoon simply wandering, eating, and wondering how you somehow got hungry again.

Valley City Frog Jump Festival

Only in Ohio could there be an entire festival built around frogs.

And honestly...

We're here for it.

Family activities.

Food.

Music.

And yes...

Frog jumping.

Cleveland Metroparks

If you've got kids, this is one of those simple experiences they'll probably remember longer than another afternoon on a tablet.
