Your Northeast Ohio Weekend Adventure Guide: October 16–18, 2026

This is the weekend when Northeast Ohio stops negotiating with fall.
Friday arrives damp and breezy. Saturday morning may flirt with freezing. By Sunday, the sky should clear, the leaves should be showing off, and every apple orchard, pumpkin patch, trail, train, brewery and Halloween event in the region will apparently expect us to be there at the same time.
We will not be.
And that is fine.
This week's guide is about choices: free miniature Halloween trains in Medina, a cold-weather fall hike, scenic railroad rides through Cuyahoga Valley, a pumpkin wall with more than 200 pumpkins, German food and polka music at The Chalet, haunted trails, live-animal encounters, family Halloween festivals, fall markets and one surprisingly good reason to visit a cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
I researched Friday, Saturday and Sunday separately, checked dates and times against current official sources whenever possible, and removed events that could not be verified.
One very important note before we begin:
Lorain County Metro Parks' Halloween Fair at Carlisle Reservation is completely SOLD OUT for 2026. There will be no additional tickets and no sales at the door. So if somebody tells you Friday afternoon, “Let's just drive out there and see,” save yourself the trip. Lorain County Metro Parks
Now let's find something you can do.
Weekend Weather
This weekend is going to feel completely different from last weekend.
The National Weather Service currently expects Friday to be mostly cloudy, breezy and cool, with showers likely—especially before midafternoon—and a high around 63°F. Friday night could fall into the upper 30s.
Saturday is the cold one. Mostly sunny, breezy and only around 51°F, with Saturday night dropping close to freezing.
Sunday currently looks like the best outdoor day: sunny and around 59°F. National Weather Service
In other words:
Friday: Keep the rain jacket handy.
Saturday: Layers. Actual layers. Not the decorative flannel people wear when it's 74.
Sunday: Use it.
ODNR's latest fall-color update says color is building statewide, with sugar maples showing reds and oranges and cooler temperatures expected to accelerate the change. This cold snap should make this a very good weekend for leaf-peeping. Ohio Department of Natural Resources
If You Only Do Five Things This Weekend
Best Overall Fall Adventure: Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
This is exactly the weekend the Fall Scenic exists for. Friday, Saturday and Sunday all have departures through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, with tickets generally $26–$39. You get peak-season scenery without fighting for a parking spot at every overlook. CVSR
Best Family Experience: Great Pumpkin Weekend at Mapleside
The famous Pumpkin Wall includes 200-plus pumpkins in 11 varieties, layered on top of the farm's giant slide, corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking and 20-plus attractions. Saturday runs 11 AM–9 PM; Sunday 11 AM–6 PM. Mapleside Farms
Best Free Adventure: Halloween Miniature Train Rides in Medina
Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers opens the miniature railroad at Lester Rail Trail Friday from 6–8 PM and Saturday from 4–8 PM. Rides are free; donations are appreciated. Costumes are encouraged, but long, flowing garments are discouraged for safety. NEOLS
Best Date Night: Moonlight Golf
Shawnee Hills Golf Course goes dark Friday night for glow-ball golf. The event includes green fees, a glow ball, Halloween novelties and a pre-round tailgate with light food and drinks. Registration is $200 per foursome. Cleveland Metroparks
Best Hidden Gem: Spring Grove Arboretum Walk
Saturday afternoon in Medina, a master arborist leads a free walk through Spring Grove Cemetery's remarkable urban forest. The cemetery contains more than 80 tree species and is also part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. It is stroller-, wagon-, wheelchair- and pet-friendly. The City of Medina
Friday, October 16
Ride Through Fall Color on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Rockside, Peninsula and Akron Northside stationsDepartures throughout the day; final listed departure 5:55 PM from Peninsula$26–$39 • All ages
Friday has a surprisingly full railroad schedule.
Current departures include 9 AM from Rockside, 9:55 from Peninsula, 11 AM from Akron Northside, 11:55 from Peninsula, 1 PM from Rockside, 1:55 from Peninsula, 3 PM from Akron Northside, 3:55 from Peninsula and 5:55 from Peninsula. CVSR
The classic ride covers about 24 miles round trip through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, with views of forest, meadows, river and the changing autumn landscape. A café car operates aboard the train. CVSR
Friday's weather makes the train especially appealing.
Outside may be damp and breezy.
Inside?
Seat.
Window.
Fall color.
Coffee.
We have solved Friday.
Fall Color Hike Behind Squire's Castle
North Chagrin Oxbow Lagoon3:00–4:00 PMFree
If Friday's showers clear by afternoon, Cleveland Metroparks is offering a short naturalist-led hike through the hills around Squire's Castle specifically focused on October color.
The park notes that native plants are setting seed and fall colors are nearing their seasonal peak. Cleveland Metroparks
This is a nice one-hour commitment rather than an expedition.
Do the hike.
Take the obligatory Squire's Castle picture.
Go get dinner.
A perfectly acceptable Friday.
Pumpkin Village Fun Friday
Mapleside Farms, 294 Pearl Road, Brunswick4:00–9:00 PMFun Friday admission starts at $15
Mapleside keeps Friday evenings simpler and less expensive than its themed Saturday-Sunday festival days.
For $15 general admission, you get access to Pumpkin Village and its 20-plus attractions, including the giant slide, corn maze, hayrides, train rides, playgrounds and other fall activities. Friday hours run 4–9 PM. Mapleside Farms
This is worth knowing if your family's Saturday already belongs to sports.
You don't have to wait until the weekend's busiest day to do the pumpkin-farm thing.
Just remember Friday evening will be chilly.
The farm will provide autumn.
You need to provide the coat.
Halloween on the Farm
Majestic Meadows Alpacas, 4195 Abbeyville Road, Medina Friday admission periods: 10 AM–5 PM and 6–7 PM; farm closes 8:30 PM Advance booking recommended
This is one of the best Medina-area choices this weekend.
Majestic Meadows gives its normal interactive animal experience a Halloween makeover with trick-or-treating, the Vortex Tunnel & Clown Building, Haunted Barn Maze, decorations, animals and photo areas.
Friday is one of the farm's special open-late dates, so once the sun goes down, the lighting and fog change the atmosphere. Majestic Meadows Alpacas
The nice thing here is that families can choose their own level.
Come during daylight with younger kids.
Come later if they want a little more atmosphere.
And unlike many Halloween attractions, you're still at a farm full of animals—which dramatically reduces the chance that everybody spends the evening regretting Dad's decision.
Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. Majestic Meadows Alpacas
FREE Halloween Miniature Train Rides
Lester Rail Trail, 3654 Lester Road, Medina6:00–8:00 PM Free • Donations appreciated
This is my favorite local discovery of the week.
The Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers operate an extensive miniature railroad at Lester Rail Trail, and Friday and Saturday are their annual Halloween public runs.
Friday's rides are 6–8 PM. Saturday's run is 4–8 PM. All ages are welcome, rides are free and the gates close promptly at 8. NEOLS
Kids are encouraged to wear costumes, but avoid capes, long dresses, veils or other loose flowing pieces that could become a safety hazard around the trains.
These are not battery-powered mall trains.
Members operate miniature steam, diesel and electric locomotives on an extensive outdoor track system built alongside Medina County Park District's Lester Rail Trail. Medina County Park District
This is exactly the kind of thing people tell you about after you've lived somewhere ten years:
“You've never taken the kids to the Halloween trains?”
Now you know.
Spree With Me: Fall Foliage
Firestone Metro Park — Tuscarawas Meadows Area6:00–7:30 PM Free
Summit Metro Parks is leading a 1.6-mile Willow Trail hike around sunset Friday, focused on fall foliage.
It also counts toward the park system's Fall Hiking Spree. Summit Metro Parks
This is the outdoor Friday-night choice for the family that doesn't need cider donuts, inflatable slides or a person dressed like Dracula to validate October.
Walk.
Look at leaves.
Talk.
Drive home.
Simple is underrated.
Moonlight Golf
Shawnee Hills Golf Course6 PM arrival • 7 PM shotgun start$200 per foursome
Golf is difficult enough in daylight.
Naturally, we have decided to remove the daylight.
Friday's Moonlight Golf event includes a pre-round tailgate, glow balls, Halloween novelties, light food and drinks, followed by a 7 PM shotgun start. Cleveland Metroparks
The $200 registration is for a team of four.
This is a genuinely good friends-night or date-night-with-another-couple option if your group enjoys golf and tolerates one another's commentary after a bad shot.
And because Friday night could fall into the upper 30s:
Bring winter gloves.
Golf gloves will not save you.
Cryptic Critters
Cleveland Metroparks Nature Education Building, North Chagrin Reservation7:00–8:30 PM Free
Bigfoot?
Mothman?
Creatures hiding in Ohio's forests that supposedly avoid cameras except when the camera belongs to someone running through the woods at night?
Cleveland Metroparks is leaning into cryptid folklore Friday with a short presentation, night hike and bonfire storytelling session that connects legendary creatures with actual local wildlife. Cleveland Metroparks
Bring a flashlight if you have one; some will be available to borrow.
This is a very good October program for older kids and teenagers.
It has enough spooky atmosphere to be interesting without becoming:
“Why did you bring me here, Dad?”
Boo at the Zoo
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo5:00–9:00 PMAdvance: $20 members • $22 nonmembers • Under 2 free
Boo at the Zoo is in full swing all weekend.
More than a dozen candy stations line the route, alongside costumed characters, the Monster Mash Dance Party, free Boomerang train rides, magicians, performers, a hay maze and Halloween photo areas. The first 1,000 guests each night receive a complimentary trick-or-treat bag. Cleveland Metroparks
It is deliberately family-friendly rather than frightening, which is useful if your child considers the seasonal aisle at Target sufficiently terrifying.
One important point: Boo at the Zoo is rain or shine and doesn't offer weather rain checks. Cleveland Metroparks
Given Friday's forecast, Saturday or Sunday may be the safer play unless you've already purchased Friday tickets.
Halloween Drive-Thru
Lake Metroparks Farmpark, Kirtland6:30–8:30 PMTicket required
Don't want to walk around in Friday's cold, damp weather?
Stay in the car.
Lake Metroparks' Halloween Drive-Thru runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings this weekend through Farmpark's decorated roadways. Lake Metroparks
The event operates rain, snow or shine.
There are vehicle restrictions: no buses, limos or oversized vehicles; vehicles are limited to about 20 feet long and 6½ feet wide, everyone must remain inside and truck beds cannot be used for passengers. Lake Metroparks
Friday may actually be the perfect night for it.
Let the weather happen outside.
Turn on the heat.
Accept the parenting victory.
Saturday, October 17
Saturday is cold but currently sunny.
And the calendar is ridiculous.
Great Pumpkin Weekend at Mapleside Farms
294 Pearl Road, Brunswick11:00 AM–9:00 PM General themed-festival admission starts at $18
Mapleside's Great Pumpkin Weekend centers on its enormous Pumpkin Wall—more than 200 pumpkins representing 11 varieties—plus pumpkin picking and pumpkin-themed treats. Mapleside Farms
That is on top of the normal Pumpkin Village lineup: the 311-foot slide, seven-acre corn maze, hayrides, jumping pillow, trains, playgrounds and more than 20 attractions.
This is not a quick pumpkin-stop.
If you're paying admission, make it the day.
Arrive around lunch.
Stay several hours.
Let the kids exhaust themselves.
Drive home while everybody is quiet.
That last feature alone may justify admission.
Spring Grove Arboretum Walk
Spring Grove Cemetery, Medina2:00–4:00 PMFree • Rain or shine
This may be the most interesting Medina event of the weekend.
A master arborist leads a group tour through Spring Grove's urban forest beginning at 2 PM, while self-guided exploration is available throughout the two-hour event. A family scavenger hunt is included. The City of Medina
The grounds contain more than 80 species of trees, and Spring Grove is also recognized by the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. The City of Medina
Strollers, wagons, wheelchairs and pets are welcome.
Most people think of cemeteries only as places we visit when we have to.
Old cemeteries are also history museums, arboretums and archives.
Spring Grove is all three.
Stark Parks Fall Fest
Tam O'Shanter Park, Canton1:00–5:00 PMFree • No registration
Stark Parks' annual Fall Fest is a very strong family option.
The afternoon includes live-animal wildlife encounters, hayrides, a treat trail, live music and fall-themed games, with concessions available for purchase. Stark Parks
Admission is free, no registration is needed and the event runs rain or shine.
Bring cash for concessions, plus chairs or a blanket if you want to settle in for the music. Stark Parks
This is one of those events that gives children enough things to do without requiring parents to spend $150 proving they love them.
Appreciated.
Harbor Harvest Fest
Veterans Memorial Park, Fairport Harbor11:00 AM–5:00 PM Free admission
Fairport Harbor turns its lakefront village into a fall festival Saturday with 41 vendors, seven food vendors, three large inflatables, live entertainment, a magic show, balloon twisting, pumpkins, contests and family activities. FHACA
The festival sits just steps from Lake Erie and Lighthouse Hill, so don't treat this as a drive-in/drive-out event.
Walk around Fairport.
See the lake.
Find the lighthouse.
Eat the cannoli.
You drove all the way there.
Use the town.
Oktoberfest at The Chalet
Cleveland Metroparks Chalet, Mill Stream Run Reservation 3:00–7:00 PM Festival admission free • Hayrides extra
This is one of Saturday's best all-ages choices.
The Chalet hosts live polka music, dancing, yard games, fall photo areas, face painting, balloon twisting, a biergarten and German food from the Cleveland Metroparks food truck. Cleveland Metroparks
Hayrides depart roughly every half hour and cost $12 for ages 12+, $10 for ages 3–11, and are free for children 2 and under riding on an adult's lap. Cleveland Metroparks
There are even quieter “no hay throwing” early rides at 2:00 and 2:30 PM for smaller children or anyone who thinks being pelted with dried vegetation sounds like an avoidable problem.
Polka.
Sausage.
Hayride.
October has a formula.
Wadsworth Scare on the Square & Thriller
Downtown WadsworthCity-posted program: 5:30–8:00 PMFree downtown community event
The zombies are coming.
Wadsworth's annual Halloween tradition brings costumed families downtown for treats and culminates in the famous local recreation of Michael Jackson's “Thriller.” The City of Wadsworth currently lists the main program from 5:30–8 PM. Wadsworth City
Some partner organizations have additional activities beginning earlier in the afternoon, so if you want to make a longer evening of it, check Main Street Wadsworth's same-day update before going. Mosaic Wadsworth
This is exactly the kind of hometown event teenagers pretend is embarrassing until they see 100 adults dancing like zombies in the street.
Then suddenly everyone has their phone out.
Boo by the Woods
Avon Lake Public Library & Kopf Reservation4:00–9:00 PMFestival activities free • Family Trail $6 • Haunted Trail $15
Avon Lake has built one of the most complete Halloween events of the weekend.
The free festival includes a DJ, inflatable obstacle course and slide, pumpkin decorating, hay maze, petting zoo, stilt walkers, face painting, character appearances, food trucks and trunk-or-treating. Avon Lake
Families wanting a mild Halloween experience can buy $6 Family Trail tickets for the daylight, not-so-spooky trail.
Older kids and adults can choose the $15 Haunted Trail, which includes an immersive vampire experience and is described as PG-13. Avon Lake
Important parking note: there is no public parking at the library Saturday. Visitors should use the Avon Lake High School north lot or Erieview Elementary; limited handicap parking is available at the library west entrance. Avon Lake
This one rewards reading the directions before you leave.
Dinosaur Adventure
Stark County Fairgrounds, Canton Saturday 9:00 AM–8:00 PM Adults $25 • Kids $35 • Under 2 free
Sometimes the best fall adventure has absolutely nothing to do with fall.
Dinosaur Adventure fills an indoor section of the Stark County Fairgrounds with life-size animatronic dinosaurs, dinosaur digs, themed bounce houses, velociraptor training and baby-dinosaur meet-and-greets. Dinosaur Adventure
The October weekend includes a “Dino-ween” angle, with costumes encouraged and candy for kids.
This is also a useful cold-weather option because the event is indoors.
Saturday is currently forecast around 51 degrees.
Dinosaurs do not care.
Spooky Luminary Hike
Rocky River Nature Center6:30–9:00 PM Free
This one has the right amount of Halloween.
A self-guided, one-mile trail is lit with luminaries along West Channel Pond Loop. Along the way, families can learn about nocturnal Northeast Ohio wildlife, then stop for a treat by the fire. Cleveland Metroparks
Natural surfaces could be muddy, so wear shoes that can handle the trail.
And with Saturday night forecast near freezing?
Wear the real coat.
Not the cute fall jacket.
The real one.
Sunday, October 18
Sunday currently looks beautiful.
Use it.
Cars & Coffee — Trunk-or-Treat Day
Medina Public Square8:00 AM–Noon Free
Sunday morning belongs to Medina.
More than 150 show cars will line Public Square and overflow lots for the final Cars & Coffee of the season. This edition doubles as Trunk-or-Treat Day, so bring the kids. MAIN STREET MEDINA
DJ Rich Hillrich provides music, lawn games are planned and several downtown coffee shops and breakfast places open early.
The event also supports Medina 4-H through a raffle. MAIN STREET MEDINA
This is a very easy Sunday morning.
Coffee for you.
Candy for them.
Cars for everybody.
Be home before the Browns have had time to ruin anyone's mood.
Spree With Me: Natural History
Sand Run Metro Park — Wadsworth Area10:00 AM–Noon Free
Want a real hike Sunday morning?
Summit Metro Parks is leading a natural-history hike along the 3.2-mile Nuthatch Trail, which the park describes as rugged and hilly. Summit Metro Parks
The hike also earns Fall Hiking Spree credit.
This is not your flat paved stroll.
Wear trail shoes.
Bring water.
And after Saturday night's near-freezing temperatures, expect a legitimately crisp Sunday morning.
Perfect.
Fall Scenic Railroad
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Sunday departures beginning at 9:00 AM$26–$39
Sunday gives you six currently listed departure options:
9 AM Rockside9:55 AM Peninsula11 AM Akron Northside11:55 AM Peninsula1 PM Rockside1:55 PM Peninsula. CVSR
If you're trying to decide between Saturday and Sunday for the train, I would choose Sunday based on the current forecast.
Sunny.
Around 59.
Fall color.
You have been handed the answer.
Great Pumpkin Weekend — Sunday
Mapleside Farms, Brunswick 11:00 AM–6:00 PM
Mapleside repeats Great Pumpkin Weekend Sunday with the Pumpkin Wall, pumpkin picking and all of Pumpkin Village's regular attractions. Mapleside Farms
Sunday is the better choice if you want a shorter day and slightly less Saturday chaos.
It also pairs well geographically with Medina Cars & Coffee:
Cars & Coffee in Medina in the morning.
Mapleside in Brunswick after lunch.
That actually makes sense.
Which is more than I can say for some family itineraries I've constructed in the past.
Shop the Barn — Fall Fest
Haymaker's Mill Historic Barn, North Canton11:00 AM–4:00 PM Free admission
Sunday's maker-market option is a good one.
Heart & Home Handmade Market fills Haymaker's Mill with local vendors, handmade goods, seasonal décor, food trucks, live music and family activities. Heart & Home Handmade Market
The market is both indoor and outdoor, which is useful on a cold October day.
And unlike a big commercial shopping event, this is one where the person selling the item often made the item.
That matters.
Support local people doing interesting things.
Dinosaur Adventure — Sensory-Friendly Morning
Stark County Fairgrounds Sunday 9:00 AM–7:00 PMSensory-friendly early entry: 8:30 AM
Dinosaur Adventure continues Sunday, with an important addition:
Doors open at 8:30 AM for a sensory-friendly hour. Dinosaur Adventure
For families who normally avoid big indoor attractions because of noise, crowds or stimulation, that makes Sunday morning worth considering.
General hours follow from 9 AM–7 PM.
Again:
Animatronic dinosaurs.
October.
We contain multitudes.
One Trail Twelve Times
Strawberry Picnic Area, North Chagrin Reservation2:00–4:00 PM Free
Naturalist Nicole Hindman has been walking the same Scenic Loop Trail every month throughout the year, documenting how it changes with the seasons.
Sunday is the October edition. Cleveland Metroparks
I love the idea behind this program.
Adventure does not always require seeing a new place.
Sometimes it means seeing the same place closely enough to notice that it isn't actually the same.
October may be the most dramatic version of the trail all year.
Bedford Fall Cart Tour
Egbert Picnic Area, Bedford Reservation2:30–4:00 PM Fee required
Want fall views without a long hike?
Cleveland Metroparks' guided cart tour moves through Bedford Reservation, stopping at Bridal Veil Falls and the Tinkers Creek Gorge National Natural Landmark overlook. Cleveland Metroparks
There is some walking involved, including stairs down to Bridal Veil Falls, but the bulk of the travel happens by cart.
This is a great option for grandparents, visitors or anyone who wants the fall scenery without turning Sunday into leg day.
Check availability before going.
Halloween on the Farm — Sunday
Majestic Meadows Alpacas, Medina. Regular Sunday admission until 3:30 PM; farm closes 5 PM
Sunday is the daylight version of Halloween on the Farm.
You still get trick-or-treating, the Vortex Tunnel & Clown Building, Haunted Barn Maze, decorations and the animals, but without the extended after-dark hours. Majestic Meadows Alpacas
That makes Sunday particularly good for younger children.
Pumpkins.
Alpacas.
Candy.
Home for dinner.
Nobody needs therapy Monday.
Spooky Stargazing & Campfire
Oak Shelter, North Chagrin Reservation7:30–9:00 PM Free
Finish the weekend outside.
Cleveland Metroparks' Out in the Parks program invites LGBTQ+ visitors, friends and allies for a spooky astronomy night around the campfire.
Naturalists will share some of the stranger stories behind the constellations before turning telescopes toward Saturn and the first-quarter Moon. Cleveland Metroparks
Sunday night should be cold but clear if the forecast holds.
Perfect telescope weather.
Warm coat weather.
Hidden Gem of the Weekend
Halloween Train Rides at Lester Rail Trail
The Halloween trains get my hidden-gem vote this week because they check nearly every box we want this guide to check.
They're local.
They're unusual.
They're outdoors.
They're family-friendly.
They're free.
And they exist because a group of people got deeply interested in miniature railroading and decided to share that enthusiasm with everybody else. NEOLS
Friday: 6–8 PM.
Saturday: 4–8 PM.
Lester Rail Trail.
Medina.
Sometimes the best adventure is the thing five miles from home you somehow never knew was there.
One Event You Cannot Get Into
Lorain County Halloween Fair — SOLD OUT
I'm adding this because a useful guide should also tell you where not to drive.
Lorain County Metro Parks has officially announced that every 2026 Halloween Fair ticket is sold out.
There will be no tickets at the door and no additional sales. Lorain County Metro Parks
So if you don't already have tickets, choose something else in this guide.
Consider that twenty minutes of wasted internet searching returned to your life.
You're welcome.

That is how it starts.
The No-Halloween Weekend
Halloween is fun.
It is also possible to enjoy October without seeing a plastic skeleton.
Friday: Ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Saturday: Spring Grove Arboretum Walk or Harbor Harvest Fest.
Sunday: Cars & Coffee, then Shop the Barn in North Canton.
No ghosts.
No vampires.
No clown building.
Just fall.
Cold-Weather Backup Plan
Saturday is only forecast around 51°F.
If somebody in your family hears that and begins drafting a formal complaint:
Dinosaur Adventure is indoors.
Shop the Barn Sunday has indoor market space.
Boo at the Zoo can still work with layers, though it is outdoors.
And Halloween Drive-Thru lets you remain inside your own heated vehicle.
October rewards planning.
What to Pack / Know Before You Go
This week's list matters more than usual:
Real layers. Saturday morning could begin near freezing.
Gloves and hats for nighttime programs, especially kids.
Flashlights for night hikes where permitted.
Trail shoes for Nuthatch Trail, the luminary hike and fall hikes.
Costumes without long capes or loose fabric for the miniature train rides.
Buy tickets in advance for Boo at the Zoo, CVSR, Dinosaur Adventure and any limited-capacity experiences.
Do not drive to Carlisle's Halloween Fair without a ticket. It is sold out.
Boo by the Woods: no regular event parking at the library; use designated school parking.
Oktoberfest at The Chalet: bring cash/card for food and hayrides; no ATM on site.
Halloween Drive-Thru: check vehicle-size restrictions before arriving.
Sunday: take advantage of the sunshine. It currently looks like the weekend's cleanest weather day.
Dad Joke of the Week
I told my kids we're going to the pumpkin festival.
My daughter asked if we're actually buying a pumpkin this time.
I said:
“Of course. I wouldn't want to squash the idea.”
She closed the car door.
Which means she needed a moment to appreciate it.
Before Monday Finds You
October has a way of making weekends feel important.
Maybe it's because the leaves only look like this for a little while.
Maybe it's because daylight is disappearing faster now.
Maybe it's because kids in Halloween costumes make it painfully obvious how quickly
they're getting bigger.
Whatever the reason, don't turn this weekend into a logistical competition.
You don't need the best event.
You don't need five events.
You need one good afternoon.
Take the train.
Ride the tiny train.
Walk through an old cemetery with an arborist.
Get lost in a corn maze.
Sit beside a bonfire.
Look at Saturn.
Watch your kid pick a pumpkin that is objectively too large to carry and allow them to discover that independently.
Go somewhere.
Be together.
Let the story happen.
Get outside. Fight the drift.
Live Stories Worth Telling.
