There is a certain kind of weekend that feels bigger than itself.
This is one of them.
The last weekend of June has a way of sneaking up on you. School is out. Summer schedules are finally settling in. Campgrounds are buzzing. Farmers markets are overflowing. Fireflies are working overtime.
Before the fireworks and Fourth of July celebrations arrive next week, this weekend gives you one last chance to slow down and enjoy summer before everybody starts sprinting toward the holiday.
So if you're looking for an excuse to get outside, here are a few ideas.
First Things First
Bring water.
I know.
You know.
Yet somehow every summer somebody leaves the house with a granola bar, sunglasses, and unlimited optimism.
Bring water.
Future you will appreciate it.
Friday Evening: Go Find a Sunset
This sounds simple because it is.
Drive north.
Find water.
Sit down.
Watch the sun disappear into Lake Erie.
That's it.
No admission fee.
No reservations.
No notifications.
No screens.
Just one of the best shows in Ohio.
Mentor Headlands.
Fairport Harbor.
Edgewater.
Vermilion.
Lorain.
You really cannot miss.
And if you bring ice cream, you've accidentally created a pretty great date night.
Medina Square Ice Cream Social and Community Band Concert
If you're staying closer to home, Medina Square offers one of those classic summer evenings that feels like it belongs in a Norman Rockwell painting.
Grab some ice cream, pull up a chair, and enjoy the Medina Community Band concert in the gazebo. Sometimes the best adventures happen ten minutes from home.
Front Porch Concert Series
Lakewood's Front Porch Concert Series continues Friday evening. Free music. Summer weather. Lawn chairs. Good company.
There are worse ways to spend a June evening.
Saturday: National "Let's Stop Saying We Need To Get Outside"
Every family has this conversation.
"We should really get outside more."
Saturday is your chance to stop saying it and do it.
Pick a trail you've never hiked.
Visit a Metro Park you've never visited.
Launch a kayak.
Ride a bike.
Take a picnic.
Try fishing.
Go somewhere that requires bug spray.
That's usually a good sign.
Wallace Lake Family Campout
One of the coolest events of the weekend is the Wallace Lake Family Campout in Cleveland
Metroparks.
Camping.
Fishing.
Campfires.
S'mores.
The whole experience packed into one weekend.
If you've ever wondered whether your family would enjoy camping, this is a fantastic way to
find out.
Lorain International Festival
One of Northeast Ohio's longest running summer festivals returns this weekend.
Food.
Music.
Culture.
Traditions from around the world.
If your idea of adventure includes trying food you cannot pronounce correctly on the first attempt, this one belongs on your list.
Ohio Scottish Games and Celtic Festival
Bagpipes.
Highland games.
Kilts.
Enough said.
The Ohio Scottish Games return to the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds this weekend and remain one of the most unique events you'll find anywhere in Northeast Ohio.
Garrettsville Summerfest
Small town Ohio absolutely shines this time of year.
Garrettsville Summerfest features family activities, live entertainment, food, and the kind of community atmosphere that reminds you why people love living in Northeast Ohio.
Beat the Heat Hike
Cleveland Metroparks is offering a Beat the Heat Hike Saturday morning.
Which sounds like exactly the kind of advice most dads have been giving since temperatures climbed above seventy degrees.
Dog Hike: Woodland to Wetland
If your dog has been staring at you like you've failed them all week, this may be your opportunity for redemption.
Leashes required.
Tail wagging expected.
Campfire Forecast
Excellent.
Not scientifically.
Spiritually.
This is a great weekend for a campfire.
Somewhere a dad is about to spend twenty minutes arranging wood like he's building a cathedral.
Five minutes later somebody will throw an entire log on it sideways.
Such is life.
Sunday: Protect the Last Day
Sunday afternoons have a reputation problem.
People treat them like the weekend is already over.
Don't.
Take the hike.
Cook outside.
Go fishing.
Take the kids for ice cream.
Find a creek.
Watch a sunset.
The emails can wait until Monday.
Family Fly Fishing
Cleveland Metroparks is offering Family Fly Fishing on Sunday.
There is something deeply satisfying about learning a skill that has existed for generations.
Even if the fish refuse to cooperate.
Snakes, Turtles and More
Lake Metroparks is hosting "Snakes, Turtles & More: Scales, Tales & Trails."
Kids love it.
Adults pretend they're bringing the kids.
Everybody has a good time.
Extreme Hiking
For those of you who hear "easy walk" and immediately think "that sounds boring," Cleveland Metroparks has Extreme Hiking Sunday morning.
Three hours.
Good terrain.
Plenty of bragging rights afterward.
Fireflies by Firelight
One of the coolest events of the weekend happens Sunday night.
Fireflies by Firelight.
Because no matter how old you get, watching lightning bugs flicker across a summer field never stops feeling a little magical.
Looking Up
The Summer Triangle is climbing higher into the evening sky.
Look east after dark and you'll find Vega, Deneb, and Altair shining overhead.
No telescope required.
Just step outside.
Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust.
Look up.
You may be surprised how much wonder is still available for free.
This Weekend's Challenge
Do one thing that cannot be done from your couch.
That's the whole challenge.
One thing.
A trail.
A paddle.
A sunset.
A bike ride.
A campfire.
A conversation around one.
Anything.
Just make sure it leaves a memory.
Until Next Week
Next weekend brings Independence Day celebrations.
Parades.
Fireworks.
Flags.
Cookouts.
All the things that make summer feel like summer.
But before we get there, enjoy this weekend.
Slow down.
Get outside.
Call somebody.
Bring the kids.
Bring the dog.
Bring a chair.
Bring gratitude.
We'll see you next week with another Northeast Ohio Weekend Adventure Guide.
Until then, live stories worth telling.
