Your Northeast Ohio Weekend Adventure Guide: Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, 2026

We have reached the part of an Ohio summer when the calendar starts playing tricks on you.

It still feels like summer. The tomatoes are finally good. The evenings still belong outside. Lake Erie is warm. The woods are green.

But school buses are beginning to reappear, football fields have lights on again, and sunset seems to arrive a few minutes earlier every night.

So I wouldn't give this weekend away.

And fortunately, Northeast Ohio isn't making that difficult.

There are fireworks in Akron. Kayaking on Lower Shaker Lake. A huge day of live music right here in Medina. Night-sky viewing through one of Ohio's largest public telescopes. The final weekend of the Asian Lantern Festival. Oktoberfest in August. The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom. A lantern launch over Coe Lake. A serious six-hour creek trek. A 5K along Whiskey Island. Farmers markets. Outdoor concerts. And one very good excuse to teach your family how to pitch a tent.

Here is what we found.

First, the Weather

As of Monday morning, the Medina-area forecast looks very usable for most of the weekend.

Friday: Partly sunny and beautiful, around 77°F.

Saturday: Around 76°F, with sunshine and clouds early and a possibility of a couple of afternoon showers.

Sunday: Cooler, around 72°F, with a chance of a morning thunderstorm and additional showers later in the day.

That's a five-to-six-day forecast, not a blood oath from the weather gods.

For anything involving boats, astronomy, outdoor concerts or several hours on a trail, check conditions again before leaving.

If You Only Do Five Things This Weekend

If the rest of this guide gives you decision paralysis, these are our picks.

Best Medina-area event: South Town Arts & Music Festival on Saturday.

Best family outdoor adventure: Free kayaking and canoeing at Lower Shaker Lake on Saturday.

Best Friday night: RubberDucks baseball followed by fireworks.

Best after-dark adventure: Night Sky Viewing at Observatory Park Friday night.

Best Sunday adventure: The Whiskey Island 5K in the morning, then choose between the Metroparks, Blossom or the final night of Asian Lantern Festival.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21

⚾ Start the Weekend With Baseball and Fireworks

Akron RubberDucks vs. Harrisburg Senators

This is one of those easy Friday-night decisions.

The RubberDucks are home against Harrisburg, and Friday includes their wonderfully strange “Look, My Hot Dog Is GREEN!” $1,000 Giveaway, Electric Blue Friday jerseys and postgame fireworks.

You don't really need to understand why there may be money hiding in hot-dog wrappers.

Sometimes it is better not to ask too many questions.

Get dinner at the park, watch some baseball, stay for fireworks, and you've built yourself a pretty good Friday night without having to organize much of anything.

Best for: Families, baseball fans and anyone who thinks Friday should end with explosions.

🌌 Night Sky Viewing at Observatory Park

Observatory Park, Montville

This is our Adventure Pick for Friday night.

Geauga Park District's Observatory Park is Ohio's internationally recognized dark-sky park, and Friday night brings free public Night Sky Viewing from 8:00 to 11:00.

And this isn't just a field where somebody points upward and says, “I think that's Jupiter.”

Nearby Nassau Astronomical Station houses a restored 36-inch Warner & Swasey telescope, one of the largest publicly accessible research-grade telescopes in Ohio.

This is worth the drive.

Bring a sweatshirt. Bring bug spray. Give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness.

And for a little while, don't look down at anything glowing in your hand.

Look up.

🥁 West African Drum Circle at Edgewater Beach

Here's a wonderfully different way to begin Friday evening.

Olu Manns leads a traditional West African Drum Circle at Edgewater Beach. All ages and experience levels are encouraged to participate, and you're welcome to bring an instrument if you have one.

Think about the setting for a second.

Lake Erie.

Summer evening.

Drums.

People you probably didn't know an hour earlier making music together.

That's exactly the sort of thing these guides are supposed to uncover.

Pack dinner and stay for sunset.

🎶 Concerts & More at the Glen

Penitentiary Glen Reservation, Kirtland

If you'd rather begin the weekend somewhere quieter, Lake Metroparks is hosting its Concerts & More at the Glen series Friday evening in the outdoor amphitheater at Penitentiary Glen Reservation.

Make a little evening out of it.

Walk part of the reservation first.

Bring a chair.

Listen to music in the woods.

Drive home after dark with the windows cracked.

August is good at this sort of thing.

🍺 Sommer Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in August?

Absolutely.

The Donauschwaben German-American Cultural Center begins its Sommer Oktoberfest Friday afternoon and keeps going all weekend. Friday hours are 4:30 to 11:30 PM.

The festival runs again Saturday from 4:00 to 11:00 PM and Sunday from noon to 6:00 PM.

If your preferred cultural education involves German food and a stein, your curriculum has arrived.

🏮 Final Weekend: Asian Lantern Festival

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

6:30–10:30 PM

This is it.

The Asian Lantern Festival closes Sunday, August 23, which means Friday, Saturday and

Sunday are your final opportunities to walk through the illuminated Zoo this summer.

This year's event includes interactive lantern installations, illuminated tunnels, a family K-pop dance experience, culturally inspired food and live performances at 6:45, 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45 PM. The walk-through route covers roughly 1.5 paved miles.

Advance nonmember tickets start at $27, while walk-up admission is $30. Children under two are free. Four-ticket advance bundles are also available.

One important detail:

The festival is rain or shine, and there are no weather rain checks.

Given Sunday's unsettled forecast, Friday may actually be your smartest night to go.

Saturday is the monster day.

There are enough events happening that you could leave home at sunrise and return after 11 PM having barely scratched the surface.

🌽 Medina Square Farmers Market

Before South Town comes alive, start on the Square.

The Medina Square Farmers Market brings 70-plus vendors downtown with local produce, flowers, herbs, meat, cheese, bread, honey, preserves, baked goods and plenty of reasons to arrive hungry.

Late August is when an Ohio farmers market gets serious.

Corn.

Peaches.

Tomatoes.

Peppers.

Melons.

The produce has finally caught up with all the enthusiasm we had back in May.

Grab coffee and breakfast. Walk the Square. Then head south.

Because Medina's biggest event of the weekend is just getting started.

🎸 South Town Arts & Music Festival

Medina's South Town District

11:00 AM–10:00 PM

This should be on every Medina-area family's radar Saturday.

The 5th Annual South Town Arts & Music Festival spreads music, art, vendors, food and performances through the South Town District for eleven hours.

And rather than simply telling you there will be “live music,” here's what is actually happening.

Mill Street

The Mill Street Art Walk runs from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM with more than 25 artists and craft vendors.

The Rios Guitar Co. stage begins with the Medina High School Encore Chorus at 11, followed by Maddi from noon to 1, an open mic/DJ period, The Cabin Sound from 1 to 3, and The Nick Puin Band from 3 to 5.

Around South Town

You'll find additional performances scattered through the district:

Ava Mauser at Keller Market & Cafe Bistro.

Bernie's All Stars at Cin Dees Place.

Skinny Moo at The Farmer's Table.

Threeport at VCS Salon & Spa.

The Alden Project in the early evening.

Laid Back & Lazy from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at Medina Brewing Co. and Big Dog Daddy's.

And Erin Nicole Neal / Chill Factor from 6:00 to 10:00 PM on the Medina Bee Park stage.

There is also a Mill Street food court, and Medina Pedal Co. will offer free rides from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM from South Elmwood and Mill Street.

This isn't a concert where you stand in one place all day.

Wander.

Hear one band.

Get something to eat.

Walk to another stage.

Browse the art.

Find another band you didn't know existed.

That's the point.

🎷 Jazz Under the Stars

Medina Uptown Park

And Medina still isn't finished.

Saturday evening, Patrick Lynch and the Eric Everett Trio perform Jazz Under the Stars in Uptown Park with music ranging from Sinatra and Dean Martin to swing, big-band favorites and pop from the '60s and '70s.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic.

You could spend the entire day in Medina:

9 AM: Farmers Market.

11 AM–6 PM: South Town.

Dinner: Somewhere local.

7 PM: Jazz Under the Stars.

That is an excellent Saturday without putting 100 miles on the car.

🚣 Take to the Lake

Lower Shaker Lake

10:00 AM–4:00 PM Free

This may be the best free outdoor experience we found this week.

Cleveland Metroparks is hosting Take to the Lake, offering kayaking and canoeing opportunities at Lower Shaker Lake from 10 AM to 4 PM.

If your family has talked about trying paddling but never quite gotten around to it, this is exactly the kind of low-barrier opportunity worth using.

Check the registration details before heading out, particularly because Saturday has an afternoon shower risk.

And yes, wear shoes that can get wet.

Because they will.

🐦 Sunrise Birding

Wildwood Picnic Shelter, Cleveland Metroparks

7:00–8:30 AM Free

For the early risers—or people whose dogs have eliminated the concept of sleeping in anyway—Cleveland Metroparks begins Saturday with a gentle birding walk along Euclid Creek.

Binoculars are available to borrow.

No birding expertise required.

You don't need to distinguish a warbler by the angle of its left eyebrow.

Walk slowly. Listen. Let the morning wake up around you.

That's enough.

🥾 Hike to My Mountain

Cleveland Metroparks

9:30–11:30 AM Free

The monthly Emerald Necklace Hikers outing tackles a 2.5-mile route to My Mountain and portions of the Buckeye and White Oak Loop trails.

Expect natural surfaces, stairs and hills beneath oak and hickory forest.

This is a good moderate Saturday hike—not a death march, not a walk around the parking lot.

Just enough to make lunch taste better.

🌳 Big Tree Hike

The West Woods, Geauga County

2:00–4:00 PM Free

The West Woods covers more than 950 acres of mature forest, wetlands and sandstone formations, and Saturday's naturalist-led Big Tree Hike runs from 2 to 4 PM.

This is the sort of program adults sometimes assume is “for kids” until somebody explains what a 150-year-old tree has survived.

Then everyone starts paying attention.

🌌 Saturday Night at Nassau

Observatory Park / Nassau Astronomical Station

9:00–11:00 PM Free

Miss Friday's astronomy program?

You get another chance Saturday.

Geauga Park District offers The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, followed later by Nassau Night Sky Viewing from 9:00 to 11:00 PM.

This is one of those experiences children remember.

Not because somebody told them space is big.

Because they actually looked through a telescope and understood it for half a second.

🏮 Cleveland Water Lantern Festival

Coe Lake Park, Berea

Gates: 5:30 PM Lantern Launch: 8:30–9:30 PM

This one could make a beautiful Saturday night.

The Water Lantern Festival begins at 5:30 PM with food trucks, music and activities. At 8 PM, attendees begin decorating their lanterns; the launch happens between 8:30 and 9:30.

General admission is currently listed at $32.99 and includes entry plus a lantern kit.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket, bug spray and weather-appropriate clothes.

It is difficult to explain why watching hundreds of small lights float across dark water feels so different from seeing the same thing in a photograph.

It just does.

🎻 The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom

Ravel's Piano Concerto in G

If your idea of an outdoor adventure can include wine, a picnic blanket and one of the world's great orchestras, we support you completely.

Saturday's Cleveland Orchestra program features works by Debussy and Ravel, including Ravel's Piano Concerto in G with pianist Nelson Goerner. The performance begins at 7 PM.

Blossom gates open two hours before Cleveland Orchestra concerts, which is exactly what you should do.

Arrive early.

Bring dinner.

Spread out on the lawn.

Forget for an evening that you're sitting only a few miles from an interstate.

Parking in the standard non-paved lots is free; a guaranteed paved parking space can be prepaid for $15.

💃 Salsa on the Lakefront

Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center

5:00–8:00 PM

Cleveland Metroparks' waterfront summer concert series continues Saturday with Sammy DeLeon y Su Orquesta, bringing salsa, Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban music to the Sailing Center at East 55th Marina.

Music.

Boats.

Lake Erie.

Summer night.

You can complicate life if you want to.

This does not need complicating.

⚾ RubberDucks Saturday: Bobblehead + Fireworks

Akron vs. Harrisburg

Saturday's RubberDucks game includes a Mystery Celebrity Bobblehead Giveaway, Summa Health's Team Up for Brain Care night and another round of postgame fireworks.

If Friday doesn't work, Saturday gives you another shot.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 23

Sunday may have the most interesting collection of outdoor adventures of the whole weekend.

Some are easy.

One absolutely is not.

Choose wisely.

🏃 Whiskey Island 5K

Whiskey Island / Wendy Park

Cleveland Metroparks hosts the Whiskey Island 5K Sunday morning through the Whiskey Island Trail and Wendy Park.

The race supports the Cleveland Metroparks K-9 unit, and preregistration is listed at $30.

Even if you're not trying to set a personal record, it's a great setting for a run.

Lake Erie on one side.

Cleveland skyline nearby.

And breakfast afterward without guilt.

Although for the record, breakfast does not require earning.

🥾 Tinker's Creek Trek

Now we get serious.

Cleveland Metroparks naturalists are leading a six-hour trek directly through Tinker's Creek, exploring the gorge, waterfalls and unusual plant life along the way.

This is not a casual Sunday stroll.

The route is up to five miles over difficult, uneven and slippery terrain, with hikers traveling in the creek itself, through ankle- to knee-deep water, around large boulders and over strenuous hills. You'll stop for lunch midway, so bring food. Hiking poles are encouraged, and sturdy footwear that can get soaked is required.

The hike can be canceled if water levels are too high.

Given Sunday's current rain forecast, verify conditions before leaving.

But if conditions cooperate and you want a genuine adventure?

There it is.

🥾 Summit Metro Parks Fall Hiking Spree Kickoff

Yes, apparently we're saying the word fall now.

I don't like it either.

Summit Metro Parks launches the 2026 Fall Hiking Spree Sunday with guided hikes of the 1.8-mile Parcours Trail at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM, or you can hike the route on your own during the event.

This is a much easier option than spending six hours knee-deep in Tinker's Creek.

Different families.

Different Sundays.

Summit Metro Parks is offering a free Tent Camping Skills for Beginners program Sunday afternoon.

If you've wanted to take your family camping but have quietly avoided doing it because you don't know what you're doing...

Go.

Everybody who camps learned somewhere.

Nobody emerged from the womb knowing which direction the rainfly faces.

Learn the basics in a low-pressure environment before figuring them out at 10:30 at night with a flashlight clenched between your teeth.

🦎 Reptiles Rule!

For younger adventurers, Geauga Park District's Timbertots: Reptiles Rule! is designed for ages three to five accompanied by an adult.

There are two sessions Sunday at The West Woods.

This is exactly the age when holding a snake can become either a treasured childhood memory or something Mom discusses at dinner for the next twelve years.

Either way, story created.

🎶 Billy Likes Soda at Merwin's Wharf

The Metroparks Sunday concert series continues along the Cuyahoga River with Billy Likes Soda, playing party, rock and dance covers from 5 to 8 PM.

This is your low-effort Sunday option.

No race bib.

No hiking poles.

No wet shoes.

Dinner and live music beside the river.

Done.

🎭 Cole Porter at Blossom

The Cleveland Orchestra

7:00 PM

Sunday night at Blossom turns from French impressionism to old-school American sophistication.

Cole Porter: Let's Misbehave begins at 7 PM, featuring The Cleveland Orchestra with conductor Steven Reineke, vocalist/pianist Tony DeSare, vocalist/trombonist Aubrey Logan and dancer John Manzari.

The program celebrates Porter's songbook with favorites including music from the golden age of American popular song.

Pack a picnic and sit on the lawn.

This is a date night with very little chance of somebody wearing a mascot costume or giving away a bobblehead.

Sometimes variety is healthy.

🦗 Singing Insects Evening Hike

Here's our Hidden Gem of the Week.

Sunday night, naturalists at Observatory Park lead a Singing Insects Evening Hike, focusing on the crickets, katydids and other insects creating that enormous late-summer soundtrack we hear every night and mostly ignore.

I love this one because it changes something ordinary.

You have heard these sounds thousands of times.

After somebody teaches you what you're actually hearing, you'll never hear an August night quite the same way again.

That's a good adventure.

🏮 One Last Night for the Lanterns

Sunday is also the final night of the 2026 Asian Lantern Festival at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Gates open at 6:30 and the event ends at 10:30.

Sunday currently carries the weekend's greatest rain risk, though, and there are no rain checks.

So if you've waited all summer...

Maybe don't wait until Sunday.

🌭 Sunday Family FUNday at the RubberDucks

Akron vs. Harrisburg

The RubberDucks wrap their homestand Sunday afternoon with QuAkron Comicon Day.

Kids 12 and younger can run the bases after the game.

Baseball on a Sunday afternoon still feels like summer should.

Maybe that's reason enough.

The Medina Weekend

Saturday 9 AM: Farmers Market on the Square.

11 AM: Walk down into South Town and start exploring the music and art.

Lunch: Eat somewhere local.

Afternoon: Keep wandering the festival.

7 PM: Take chairs back to Uptown Park for Jazz Under the Stars.

Minimal driving.

Maximum summer.

The Outdoor Family Weekend

Friday night: Observatory Park Night Sky Viewing.

Saturday morning: Take to the Lake at Lower Shaker Lake.

Sunday afternoon: Tent Camping Skills for Beginners with Summit Metro Parks.

By Monday your family will have looked into space, paddled a lake and learned how to build a campsite.

That's a weekend.

The Date Weekend

Friday: Sommer Oktoberfest.

Saturday: Picnic and The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom.

Sunday: Dinner at Merwin's Wharf with live music.

And if the relationship survives three consecutive nights together, congratulations.

Things appear promising.

Dad Joke of the Week

My son asked why I brought a ladder on our hike.

I told him the trail guide said we'd be reaching new heights.

He hasn't spoken to me since.

Which means the hike has been very peaceful.

One Last Thing

By late August, summer starts whispering that it will be here forever.

It won't.

There will be another weekend.

But it won't be this weekend.

The corn won't taste exactly like this.

Your kids won't be exactly this age.

The evening light will not fall quite the same way.

So choose something.

You don't need to do seventeen events.

You don't need matching adventure shirts.

You don't need the perfect Instagram photograph.

Go paddle the lake.

Listen to somebody play music.

Walk through the woods before sunrise.

Lie on the grass at Blossom.

Look through a telescope.

Let the kids stay up too late.

Get a little wet.

Get a little tired.

Come home with dirt in the car.

Monday will get here whether you make a memory first or not.
