First, a quick thank-you.

After this last week at the Medina County Fair talking with families about camping, glamping, kayaking, astronomy and getting outside, we were reminded why we started doing these guides in the first place.

There are a lot of people who want to do more with their weekends.

The hard part is figuring out what is actually happening.

So we did the digging for you.

And this weekend is ridiculous.

There is a massive World War II living-history event on the Lake Erie shore. Airplanes and aerobatics are taking over Akron-Fulton Airport. More than 100 musicians are turning Akron porches into stages. Little Italy is celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. There are kayak races, county fairs, medieval Vikings, fireworks, line dancing in a botanical garden, a Gilmore Girls-inspired festival in Medina, vintage base ball, a triathlon on the Cleveland lakefront and even a late-night moth hunt.

You are not going to do all of it.

That's okay.

Pick something.

Make a story out of it.

🌦️ First: This Weekend's Weather

Friday currently looks like the winner. Medina's forecast calls for pleasant conditions with sun and high clouds, around 76°F, while Cleveland is looking at about 77°F with intervals of clouds and sun.

Saturday is the day to watch. Medina currently has occasional rain and a thunderstorm in the forecast, while Cleveland could see heavy morning showers followed by additional rain or thunderstorms during the afternoon. Several of Saturday's biggest events are outdoors, so do not blindly follow this guide without checking the organizer's weather updates Saturday morning.

Sunday looks better again, with clouds and sun, highs in the mid-to-upper 70s and humid conditions.

Translation:

Friday: Go.Saturday: Go, but pack the rain gear and have a Plan B.Sunday: Go again.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 14

🇺🇸 D-Day Conneaut

Conneaut Township Park • Conneaut

If you have never experienced D-Day Conneaut, this is the weekend to put it on your Northeast Ohio bucket list.

Running August 13 through 15 along Lake Erie, the enormous WWII living-history event recreates the people, equipment, camps and experiences surrounding the Normandy invasion. Admission is free, but 2026 is a ticketed event and visitor capacity is limited, so you need to secure a free visitor pass before making the drive.

This isn't a museum where everything sits behind glass. You're walking through living-history encampments, interacting with reenactors and experiencing an environment designed to make history tangible.

Know before you go: This is a destination event. Allow plenty of time, wear shoes made for walking, and read the event's parking information before leaving home. There is not conventional event parking directly beside everything, and organizers provide detailed visitor parking instructions.

MAC pick: If you have a middle-school or high-school-aged kid who thinks history is boring, take them here.

A textbook has never fired an artillery piece.

🎪 Mentor CityFest

Mentor Civic Center Park • 8600 Munson Road

5:00–11:00 PM • Free admission & parking

This may be the best free family Friday night in Northeast Ohio.

CityFest opens at 5:00 with food vendors, giant inflatables, carnival games and the Main Street vendor area. The Cincinnati Circus Thrill Show performs at 5:30, 7:30 and 9:00; Diana Chittester performs from 6:30 to 7:30; and Just Like Pink, a P!NK tribute, takes the amphitheater stage from 8:00 to 10:00.

The Kids Zone is not just three sad bounce houses beside a funnel-cake stand. The city lists a zipline, rock wall, trapeze, giant slides, obstacle courses, a ninja-warrior course, Nerf Battle Zone and more. Some attractions require a paid wristband even though general admission is free.

Parking is available at Mentor High School, the Senior Center, Fire Station #5, the Police

Department and the Laketran lot on Market Street.

Best for: Families who want to arrive after work and have the evening planned for them.

🇮🇹 127th Feast of the Assumption

Little Italy • Holy Rosary Church, Cleveland

Friday festivities: 6:00–11:00 PM

If CityFest is the family carnival choice, this is the food-and-atmosphere choice.

Friday evening's Feast schedule includes churchyard food and games from 6:00 to 11:00, The GoodFellos with Dennis DeSapri from 6:00 to 10:00, Primavera Band at 7:00 and the Italian Band of Cleveland from 8:30 to 10:00.

Go hungry.

Walk Mayfield Road.

Listen to the music.

Eat something somebody's grandmother would be disappointed to learn you tried to replicate at home.

Then eat something else.

The Feast continues Saturday and Sunday, and we'll come back to it because the weekend's most important traditional events happen later.

🌸 Hydrangea Hoedown: Line Dancing Night

Cleveland Botanical Garden

6:00–9:00 PM • Doors 5:30 PM

$20 members • $25 nonmembers

Here's a genuinely different Friday date-night idea.

The Cleveland Botanical Garden is hosting outdoor line dancing with Linedance Is My Therapy among the summer gardens. Your ticket also gives you the chance to wander the indoor displays and gardens before or after dancing.

And here's the useful part given this weekend's weather uncertainty:

It is rain or shine and moves indoors if necessary. 

So if you're the person who does not enjoy planning a date around Doppler radar, bookmark this one.

🎸 Afterburn Music Festival

Victory Park • North Ridgeville

Friday & Saturday • Music begins around 1:00 PM

If your preferred outdoor activity involves significantly more electric guitar, Afterburn is a two-day outdoor rock festival with continuous music across two stages.

Friday is headlined by Third Eye Blind; Saturday by Skillet. The overall festival mix is pop punk, hard rock and metal. Tickets are required.

This is an all-day commitment rather than a "stop by for twenty minutes" festival.

Because Saturday currently carries a thunderstorm risk, Friday may be the better choice if you're primarily going for the music.

🦋 Magnificent Moths

Liberty Park Nature Center • Twinsburg

9:00–11:00 PM

This is exactly the kind of thing we love finding for these guides.

When everybody else is heading home, Summit Metro Parks is turning on the lights and looking for moths.

A naturalist will explore the surprisingly colorful nighttime world of local moths, from rosy maple moths to large sphinx moths. Summit Metro Parks specifically recommends bringing bug spray and a camera. The program runs from 9:00 to 11:00 at Liberty Park Nature Center, 9999 Liberty Road.

Your kids are allowed to stay up late.

It's educational.

You are welcome.

🎡 Cuyahoga County Fair

Berea Fairgrounds

Friday: Noon–11:00 PM

The 129th Cuyahoga County Fair runs all week through Sunday, with livestock, Junior Fair projects, produce, arts and crafts, carnival rides and entertainment. Friday through Sunday admission is $12 online or $14 at the gate, and parking is free. Ride wristbands are $30 on-site Friday through Sunday.

One useful detail for families with teenagers: after 6:00 PM, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a sober, competent adult age 21 or older, with no more than six minors per chaperone.

Also worth knowing: fair gates are cashless, although many vendors still accept cash.

🔥 Closer-to-Medina Friday Option: Valley City Street Fair

The 91st Valley City Street Fair kicks off Friday evening and continues through Sunday at the Valley City Fire Department, 6700 Center Road. The longtime fundraiser features food, drinks, games and entertainment; posted 2026 hours are Friday 6:00 PM to midnight, Saturday noon to midnight and Sunday 2:00 to 8:00 PM.

If you want something close to home without turning Friday into an interstate expedition, this deserves consideration.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15

Saturday is absolutely loaded.

Unfortunately, Saturday is also the day the weather forecast currently dislikes.

So we're giving you plenty of choices.

🚣 Whiskey Island Paddlefest

Wendy Park • Cleveland

7:30 AM–1:00 PM

This might be the single most Medina Adventure Company event of the weekend.

The 12th annual Paddlefest includes 1-mile, 2-mile and 6-mile kayak/SUP races, plus a kids race and the noncompetitive Capture the Swag Fun Paddle. It is designed for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Adult/youth competitive race categories shown by Metroparks are generally $55, while the roughly quarter-mile race for ages 6–11 is free.

This would normally be near the top of our list.

But with heavy showers and thunderstorms currently possible Saturday, check Cleveland Metroparks before loading the boats. Lake Erie does not negotiate.

🥕 Stay Local: Medina Square Farmers Market

Historic Medina Public Square

9:00 AM–1:00 PM

More than 70 vendors fill the Square Saturday morning with locally grown produce, meat, cheese, flowers, herbs, breads, baked goods, honey, preserves and plenty of things you did not intend to buy until you smelled them. Parking is free.

And this week, don't rush home afterward.

Because Medina has something completely different happening later that afternoon.

☕ Stars Hollow Fest

Medina Uptown Park

4:00–9:00 PM

Yes.

Stars Hollow.

Black Cat Books & Oddities is bringing a retro Gilmore Girls-inspired celebration to the Square with live music, dancing, literary costumes, authors and more than 100 vendors, including food vendors. The Town Hall & Engine House Museum will also be open from 4:00 to 8:00.

Even if you have never watched a single episode of Gilmore Girls, this sounds like a great late-summer downtown event.

Our Medina Saturday Plan

Do the Farmers Market from 9:00 to 11:00.

Go home. Pretend you're going to accomplish something.

Realize that's unlikely.

Return around 4:00 for Stars Hollow Fest.

That is a perfectly respectable Saturday.

🎶 Highland Square PorchRokr

Highland Square • Akron

11:00 AM–9:00 PM • Free

This is one of Northeast Ohio's most creative festivals.

Instead of building one giant concert stage, Highland Square turns front porches, yards, bars and neighborhood spaces into stages.

Performances run from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, followed by the main-stage headliner from 7:30 to 9:00. Organizers expect 100+ performers across 30+ performance spaces, along with food trucks, vendors, a Kids Zone and beer garden.

Bring comfortable shoes, a refillable water bottle and either a camp chair or blanket if you want to settle in at one of the yards. Bikes are actually a smart way to move between performances.

PorchRokr is officially rain or shine, but thunderstorms and lightning can delay or cancel performances. That's especially relevant this Saturday.

MAC rating: Very high.

Neighborhoods becoming venues, strangers sitting in front yards together, people actually talking to one another...

That's fighting the drift.

✈️ Props & Pistons Festival

Akron-Fulton Airport

Saturday & Sunday • 10:00 AM–4:00 PM

This is probably our top family adventure of the entire weekend.

Props & Pistons combines an air show, aircraft displays, kids activities, food trucks, veteran ceremonies and aviation experiences at Akron-Fulton Airport.

The aerial program includes the U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demonstration Team, a P-51 Mustang Heritage Flight and other aerobatic and historic aircraft demonstrations. Static aircraft scheduled to appear include military and historic aircraft ranging from a P-51 Mustang to National Guard helicopters and larger transport aircraft; as always with aviation events, appearances can change due to weather, maintenance or operational needs.

There's also a free Kids Zone hosted by the Akron Children's Museum with bounce houses, crafts and educational activities.

One of the more meaningful pieces is the Flight of the Flags ceremony, during which burial flags of veterans are flown aboard a WWII TBM Avenger before being returned to their families.

Parking is free at 1210 Massillon Road, with shuttle buses to the festival; buses are wheelchair accessible. A handicap drop-off is available at 1800 Triplett Boulevard.

Because Saturday's weather is uncertain, Sunday may be the smarter day to target this event.

🇺🇸 Final Day of D-Day Conneaut

Saturday is the final day of the 2026 D-Day Conneaut event.

If Saturday is your only option, check ticket availability before driving all the way east. The free tickets are capacity-controlled and can disappear as the weekend approaches.

Given the current Saturday weather forecast, also check the event's same-day updates.

🇮🇹 Feast Day in Little Italy

Feast of the Assumption

Saturday is the actual Feast Day, making this the most traditional and ceremonial day of the Little Italy celebration.

The Solemn Mass begins at 10:00 AM, followed at approximately 11:15 AM by the solemn procession through Little Italy. A cavatelli dinner is served from 11:30 to 3:00 in the air-conditioned church hall, while outdoor food stands and games run from noon to 11:00.

Live music continues through the afternoon and evening, including G4 Live, Nick Costa and Company, Primavera Band and the Italian Band of Cleveland.

If you've only experienced the Feast as "that place with really good Italian food," Saturday morning shows you what the tradition is actually about.

🎪 Mentor CityFest: Day Two + Fireworks

Saturday begins with the CityFest Parade at 10:00 AM, with nearly 100 participating organizations making their way from Shore Middle School toward Civic Center Park.

The festival itself runs noon to 11:00.

The Cincinnati Circus performs at 2:30, 4:15 and 6:00. The 2.6-mile Color Dash & Walk starts at 4:00, with day-of registration available from 2:30 to 3:30; the posted fee is $30 on race day.

7 Summers, a Morgan Wallen tribute, performs from 8:00 to 10:00.

Then:

🎆 Fireworks at 10:00 PM

Admission and parking are free.

If the weather cooperates, this is probably the easiest answer to:

"What can we do Saturday that everyone in the family will enjoy?"

🛡️ Great Lakes Medieval Faire

Rock Creek

11:00 AM–7:00 PM Saturday & Sunday

This weekend's theme is Celtic & Viking Weekend.

Expect Celtic dancers, Viking warriors, mock battles, pipes, drums, music, mythology and plenty of people who have clearly spent significantly more time thinking about chain mail than the rest of us.

The Faire opens at 11:00, with opening ceremonies beginning at 10:45, and operates rain or shine. Posted gate admission is $25 for adults 13+, with other child, senior, military and first-responder pricing available; parking is $5.

This one works surprisingly well for families because kids do not need much convincing to watch knights fight.

🎤 All Love Music Festival

Centennial Plaza • Canton

11:00 AM–10:00 PM • Free

Want live music without buying a festival ticket?

The All Love Music Festival brings musicians from Northeast Ohio, Northwest Pennsylvania and surrounding areas to downtown Canton's Centennial Plaza for a free Battle of the Bands-style community music festival.

Food trucks, nearby restaurants, vendors and an on-site bar round out the day.

For the price of admission—nothing—this is a strong option.

🎸 Afterburn: Day Two

Afterburn continues Saturday at Victory Park in North Ridgeville with Skillet headlining the second day of the festival. Music runs across two stages with the festival's pop-punk, hard-rock and metal lineup.

Again: watch Saturday's weather closely. This is an outdoor festival.

🚣 Nature Explorers: Lake Kelso Canoe

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

10:00 AM–Noon • Free

Here's something much quieter.

Geauga Park District is offering a Lake Kelso canoe program for children ages 6–11 with an adult. The program is free, but advance registration/availability should be checked before making the drive.

Lake Kelso sits inside the 305-acre Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve, a particularly sensitive glacial wetland system. Public boating is normally prohibited, which makes organized paddling programs like this an unusual opportunity to experience the lake.

Thunderstorms could affect this one. Check before departing.

🏮 Asian Lantern Festival

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

6:30–10:30 PM Friday, Saturday & Sunday

If you've been meaning to see this year's Asian Lantern Festival, all three nights this weekend are walk-through nights.

The roughly 1.5-mile paved route includes illuminated displays throughout several areas of the Zoo, plus live performances at 6:45, 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45 PM.

Advance pricing is cheaper than waiting until you arrive. Children under two are free, and four-pack pricing is available online before 5:30 PM.

One important weather note:

The Lantern Festival is rain or shine and does not offer weather rain checks. 

So ponchos: yes.

Complaining to the tiger about the rain: ineffective.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 16

Sunday is the sleeper day this weekend.

There is a lot happening.

And as of Monday morning, the weather looks considerably friendlier than Saturday.

🏊🚴🏃 Tri CLE Rock Roll Run

Edgewater Park • Cleveland

First race activity begins early Sunday

Want to see Cleveland's lakefront being used the way it should be?

Tri CLE brings Super Sprint, Sprint and Olympic-distance triathlons, plus duathlon and aquabike events to Edgewater Park. The swim is at Edgewater Beach, the bike course uses a closed-to-traffic section of Memorial Shoreway, and the run goes through Edgewater and the nearby neighborhood.

Race registration closes Thursday, August 13 at midnight, but you certainly do not have to race to enjoy the spectacle.

Grab coffee.

Watch the sunrise.

Cheer loudly for strangers doing things before breakfast that you currently have no intention of doing.

✈️ Props & Pistons: Sunday

If Saturday's forecast scares you away, Sunday would be my choice for Props & Pistons.

The festival runs again from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with aerial demonstrations, static displays, food trucks, the free Kids Zone and veteran programming.

If I were choosing one big family adventure this weekend, this is probably it.

Kids get airplanes.

Dad gets airplanes.

Mom gets to remind Dad the P-51 is not available on a 72-month financing special.

Everybody wins.

🛶 Lake Kelso Kayak

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

10:00–11:30 AM • Free

Geauga Park District's Sunday kayak program is open to ages 10 and older with an adult and is free. Because Lake Kelso normally prohibits public boating to protect the vulnerable aquatic habitat, guided paddling opportunities are special. Check registration availability before heading out.

There's also a free Hound Hike from 8:00 to 9:00 AM at Burton Wetlands Sunday morning.

Dog hike followed by kayaking.

That's a fairly solid Sunday before lunch.

⚾ 19th-Century Base Ball at Hale Farm

Hale Farm & Village • Bath

1:00–4:00 PM

The Akron Black Stockings take the field Sunday using 19th-century base-ball rules and vintage equipment.

Including:

No gloves.

Bring folding chairs and sun hats and watch history played rather than displayed.

Hale Farm itself is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM during its summer season, so build this into a full living-history afternoon rather than arriving only for the game.

🎡 Final Day of the Cuyahoga County Fair

Noon–10:00 PM

Sunday is your final chance at the 2026 Cuyahoga County Fair.

And at 2:00 PM, the grandstand hosts the 2026 Demolition Derby.

Tickets are $15 general admission or $25 preferred seating and are available online only; derby admission is separate from regular fair admission.

Sunday fair admission is $12 online or $14 in person, parking remains free, and rides open at noon.

There is something deeply American about ending a week of livestock judging by smashing cars into one another.

I don't make the rules.

🎻 Urban Troubadour

Spring Grove Cemetery • Medina

2:00–3:00 PM • Free

Here is our hidden gem of the weekend.

Medina's America 250 programming brings Urban Troubadour to Spring Grove Cemetery Sunday afternoon for a free roving classical-music experience with touches of jazz and folk.

Bring a lawn chair.

An old cemetery, summer afternoon, live acoustic music...

That's the kind of small local event most people never know happened until someone tells them Monday morning.

Now you know.

🛡️ Celtic & Viking Weekend Continues

The Great Lakes Medieval Faire runs again Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, giving you a second chance to choose bagpipes, Vikings and mock warfare over household chores.

I see no flaw in this reasoning.

🇮🇹 A Beautiful Way to Close the Feast

The Feast of the Assumption continues Sunday in Little Italy from noon to 10:00 PM.

There's another cavatelli dinner from 11:30 to 3:00, the Avanti Band from noon to 4:00, Swamp Boogie from 5:00 to 9:00 and Primavera Band and Choral Group at 7:00.

But if you want to experience something more meaningful than simply festival food, stay late.

An 8:00 PM Mass is followed at approximately 9:00 PM by the candlelight procession on Mayfield Road and closing prayer service. 

That would be a memorable way to end the weekend.

🎶 Sunday Evening at Merwin's Wharf

Cleveland Metroparks

5:00–8:00 PM

Not ready to surrender the weekend yet?

The Zoomies perform disco, funk, pop and dance music at Merwin's Wharf Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 as part of Cleveland Metroparks' summer concert programming.

Grab dinner.

Sit by the river.

Listen to music.

Pretend Monday has not located you yet.

🏮 Asian Lantern Festival: Sunday Night

The Zoo's Asian Lantern Festival also runs Sunday from 6:30 to 10:30 PM, making it a great final stop if you want one last nighttime adventure before the week begins.

Sunday's forecast currently looks substantially better than Saturday's, so if you're flexible, this may be the evening to go.

That's two very different periods of American history experienced in ways a textbook cannot replicate.

Our Pick for Sunday

10:00 AM–4:00 PM: Props & Pistons in Akron.

Then, if everybody still has something left:

5:00–8:00 PM: Dinner and live music at Merwin's Wharf.

That is a very good Northeast Ohio Sunday.

⭐ Our Top Five This Weekend

If the sheer number of choices just made things worse, here is where I'd narrow it:

Best overall family adventure: Props & Pistons, preferably Sunday given the current forecast.

Best one-of-a-kind experience: D-Day Conneaut.

Best free festival: Mentor CityFest.

Best outdoor adventure: Whiskey Island Paddlefest, weather permitting.

Best Medina-area day: Farmers Market followed by Stars Hollow Fest.

And best event you probably wouldn't have discovered on your own: Urban Troubadour at Spring Grove Cemetery Sunday afternoon.

😂 Dad Joke of the Week

My kids asked if I knew any good airplane jokes before Props & Pistons.

I told them I had one...

but it would probably go over their heads.

They walked away.

Which I consider a successful dad joke.

Before You Go

We research these guides using current event schedules, but this is Northeast Ohio and apparently Saturday has chosen violence.

Outdoor schedules can change because of rain, thunderstorms, aircraft availability, water conditions or other circumstances. Before driving an hour, check the organizer's same-day update, particularly for Props & Pistons, Paddlefest, Porch Rokr, D-Day Conneaut and Saturday fireworks.

Then go.

Take the kids somewhere they've never been.

Listen to music from somebody you've never heard of.

Paddle somewhere new.

Talk to a WWII reenactor.

Watch an F-16 fly.

Eat the cavatelli.

Cheer for a stranger in a triathlon.

Sit beneath a tree and listen to a violin.

Summer is getting shorter.

There will always be another load of laundry.

There are only so many August weekends.
